In the Paper
10 May 2010
An image from our exhibition “Domweg gelukkig op de Nieuwmarkt” is illustrating an article in the Amsterdams Stadsblad. The article “We danced for three months” (“We dansten drie maanden”) by Johan Vogels is an interview with one of the residents of the Flesseman Elderly Centre, telling about the days of the war. The chosen work ‘Jatten bij tram 14′ portraits people stealing wooden block from under the tram rails during the ‘Dutch famine of 1944’ (hongerwinter). The stolen wood was used to heat the houses. The series of works now exhibited in Flesseman is based upon such stories and other memories of the residents.
Snitching tram 14
“Everything was stolen in the hunger winter. Staircases were taken away from deserted houses, shutters were taken down , we burned everything!
Tram rails, for example, we burned them for warmth. The tram tracks
were tarred, though. If you burned them, it stank. You could not get the tar out.”
Prepare to spring

Memories from an Opening
23 April 2010

Last Friday, on the 16th of April, we celebrated the opening of the exhibition “Domweg gelukkig op de Nieuwmarkt” in the Flesseman center for the elderly, on the Nieuwmarkt in Amsterdam.
The exhibition shows the result of our pilot project: 7 series of works based on memories and stories that were collected during a workshop with 11 residents of Flesseman.
The opening took place at the ground floor, where the works will be exposed until the 15th of August. With an accordionist playing favorite Amsterdam tunes, residents, friends and colleagues gathered, telling and listening to stories from the past and making plans for the future.
We are thrilled about the many positive reactions we got. Seeing and hearing the residents taking part in the project – who saw the resulting works for the first time – recognizing their stories weaved into the canvases hanging on the walls was for us the most valued feedback. Other visitors told us they were moved by the link to the past that was laid in the works, a link that brought up memories of stories told by parents and grandparents.
We would like to give special thanks to Jeannete Groot from Flesseman for her help and support, to Martje Oosterkerk for all her help and lovely speech and to Geertje van Berlo for her great texts.
Photos: Dikla Arama.
The exhibition is open for the public everyday until 17:00.
